241 SUPPORTERS PUSH FOR COASTAL COMMISSION APPROVAL
Thousands have voiced their strong support this month

IRVINE, Calif. (January 30, 2008) – A week before the Coastal Commission considers the completion of the 241 Toll Road, the online support list for the project has topped 9,300 individuals and elected officials from all over California. Thousands more supporters have written to the Coastal Commission, urging the Commissioners to approve the 16-mile extension. The following are excerpts from recent letters sent to the Commission:

Anyone who lives in South County knows that on a beautiful, peaceful, sunny weekend day, the traffic going both north and south is so bad; you might as well walk at some point! The homework has been done. We are not allowed to be irresponsible in these endeavors. Move on and keep California moving! (Kimberly Myers, San Clemente)

Approving the extension of the 241 is an environmentally smart decision. As a driver of I-5 daily, my commute time from my home in Oceanside to work in Orange County and back would be cut by 50 percent each way. That means 50 percent less use of gas, 50 percent fewer emissions affecting air quality. (Jeff Nadler, Oceanside)

The widening of I-5 makes no sense at all. Just one wreck would tie up traffic as it does now. An alternate alignment with the proper respect for the environmental issues is the best proposal. I would hate to see existing homes and businesses torn down when there is plenty of uninhabited land to the east of San Clemente. (Allan Williams, San Clemente)

I am part owner of a $100 million business in Orange County. We employ 120 people. I realize there are environmental concerns with the extension of the 241. The widening of I-5 would be a disaster to local residents and businesses, eventually making the rush hour mess at El Toro “Y” even worse. Doing nothing is not an option. If the congestion on I-5 gets any worse, it will make it difficult for us to attract and keep good employees…(Bob Curtis, Rancho Santa Margarita)

The opening of the current 73 and 241 Toll Roads has been such a blessing to motorists, offering vehicles an alternative route. We still have beautiful countryside, wildlife, and open spaces thanks to the efforts of those toll road designers. It is apparent that the extension has been designed with the same intense scrutiny to make our area safe and usable by people as well as animals. (George and Karen Thagard, Trabuco Canyon)

I experience firsthand the impact that gridlock has on the productivity and safety of my family every single day of every single week of every single year. Let’s get it done, anything to alleviate the pain and cost of gridlock on our worsening economy. (Karl Kacerek, San Clemente)

I support intelligent growth and a common sense approach to confronting the many challenges Southern Californians face in the years ahead...including traffic mitigation affecting single corridors to major destinations...San Diego to Orange County. This is a good plan. (Gary Wilcox, San Diego)

I drive through South Orange County regularly for work and the final segment of the Foothill (241) Toll Road must be approved and completed SOON! For 25 years, county plans have assumed that Foothill-South would be implemented. The county has been built, expanded and populated with this road in mind as a relief and connector. To go without it would be detrimental to the county, its residents and its drivers. (James Green, Anaheim Hills)

The Coastal Commission will vote on the completion of the 241 on February 6. The hearing begins at 9 a.m. at Wyland Hall on the Del Mar Fairgrounds, 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd. To view the list of 241 supporters, visit http://www.ftcsouth.com/home/supporters.asp.
